Which Sandisk CompactFlash Card for the Nikon D200?
Does getting the latest Sandisk Extreme III CF card justify the cost?
I’ve penned a short summary of the related discussion thread started by Dave Hutchinson, which considers several points in the Extreme III vs Ultra II debate:
SanDisk Extreme III CompactFlash Card
- The D200 won’t be able to fully utilize the 20MB/sec write speed of this card (see this page of Phil Askey’s Nikon D200 review for write times)
- In this card’s favour is the claimed higher durability, performance and reliability under extreme conditions, capabilities which are not claimed for the Ultra II
SanDisk Ultra II CompactFlash Card
- 8MB/sec write speed means a lower-priced card
- Ultra II cards are fast enough for Paul Guba.
My personal conclusion is to just get the card that meets your budget and requirements » which means the Sandisk Ultra II for most photographers.

The above statement: “The D200 won’t be able to fully utilize the 20MB/sec write speed of this card (see this page of Phil Askey’s Nikon D200 review for write times)” is false.
Need to look at the “Burst of JPEG Large/Fine images” and “File Flush Timing” sections where the Lexar 133x and Extreme III outperform the Extreme II.
Buying a slower card to save a few bucks is like buying a Ferrari and using 87 octane fuel.
