Image Samples From The Nikon D200 + Nikkor 18-200mm Combo

Posted by David Chin on September 18th, 2006 in Amazing Nikon D200 Image Samples

One of the more popular questions floating around is whether to buy the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens or the Nikkor 18-200mm lens; it actually turns out that the choice is not always that obvious.

With the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8 lens, you get the best telephoto zoom lens Nikon has to offer; you also get to pay huge amounts of money and carry a lot of weight and stick out like a sore thumb as you walk around in public areas with that lens mounted on your D200. It’s all worth it, however, if you’re looking for the sharpest images possible from a zoom lens, if you need wide-open apertures at f/2.8, etc - so, know whether you want or need the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR lens first, then vote with your wallet if it’s a YES.

For the rest of us who’re interested in buying a versatile lens with a huge zoom range that allows you to take pictures in almost all situations, look no further than the Nikkor 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6g IF-ED AF-S DX VR lens. In fact, Luke presents this series of images that best exemplifies the range of photos you can capture with this optic:

If you have unlimited (or a lot of) money, go ahead and buy both. Otherwise, you might want to consider this “checklist” and 18-200 “trade-offs” to decide if the Nikon 18-200 or the 70-200mm best suits your needs.

Why bother with either the 18-200 or the expensive 70-200 2.8 when you can get a second hand 80-200 2.8 D ED-AF for around £450….If quality and detail is your aim in photography (for most it should be) buy one. for convenience without interest in end results get the 18-200. for those with money get the 70-200 VR.
I am 64 and have always been a keen photographer with Nikon gear but I have never been keen in loosing quality for convenience sake, you can save a lot of money by getting quality second hand stuff which will always be on offer while those with plenty of money can’t wait to get the latest offerings.
